Test Routes

The following are possible testing routes at Ridgefield Driving School. Please remember that nothing is guaranteed. The DMV Agent may choose a completely different route from what listed below.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND students practice on all roads surrounding RDS in preparation for their test.

 

ROUTE #1

Exit RDS at the traffic light near the Mobil gas station. Turn RIGHT onto Danbury Road.

  • I do NOT recommend a right-on-red.
  • When the light turns green, you have the ROW and should get the car moving immediately. HOWEVER, beware of the vehicle directly across cutting you off.

Bear LEFT at the flashing yellow light.

  • You have ROW.
  • 20mph MAX! on this turn.
  • Yes, you should signal.

Follow to the first traffic light. Turn LEFT onto Prospect Street. 

  • Do not cross over yellow line when moving into the turning lane.
  • Green left turn arrow = GO!
  • Yellow left turn arrow = STOP before the white line if you can do so safely. If you cannot stop before entering the intersection, proceed with caution.
  • Solid green light = GO if it is clear of oncoming traffic (look for a large gap in traffic, be conservative). If you cannot go, stop and wait behind the white line.

Follow to the stop sign. Go STRAIGHT.

  • You must YIELD to vehicles at the stop sign on the left if they got there first and are turning up the hill (if this is the case, be patient as they may be delayed in    their ability to go). If you are the first person to arrive (or get there at the same time as the vehicle on the left), you have ROW.

Follow up and over the hill. At the stop sign at the bottom of the hill make a sharp LEFT onto Sunset Lane.

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there at the same time as the vehicle on the left, you have ROW.

Follow to the end. Turn RIGHT onto Grove Street. 

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there at the same time as the vehicle on the left, you have ROW.

Follow to the stop sign. 

OPTION 1 – Turn RIGHT onto Old Quarry Road. 

  • When turning right, creep forward before you commit to the turn and watch for vehicles from the opposite direction. Vehicles coming up the hill and turning in front of you have the ROW.
  • Reverse parking on the right will be done in the old Fit Club parking lot on the left.
  • Once you are done parking, turn RIGHT out of the parking lot and then RIGHT again to Grove Street. 
  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there as the same time as the vehicle on the left, you have ROW.

OPTION 2 – Go STRAIGHT at the stop sign.

  • You must YIELD to vehicles at the stop sign on the right if they got there first (if this is the case, be patient as they may be delayed in their ability to go). If you got there at the same time, they have ROW (once again, be patient). If you got there first, you have ROW.
  • When you are finally able to go, creep forward before you commit and watch for vehicles from the opposite direction. Vehicles coming up the hill and turning in front of you have the ROW.

Follow to the traffic light. Turn LEFT onto Danbury Road and then a quick RIGHT back into RDS.

  • When turning left at the green light, yield to vehicles from the opposite direction who are going straight or turning right.
  • When turning right back into RDS, go slow and be accurate.
  • Reverse parking on right.

 

ROUTE #2

Exit RDS at the traffic light near the Mobil gas station. Turn RIGHT onto Danbury Road.

  • I do NOT recommend a right-on-red.
  • When the light turns green, you have the ROW and should get the car moving immediately. HOWEVER, beware of the vehicle directly across cutting you off.

Turn RIGHT at the flashing yellow light onto N. Salem Road. 

  • You have ROW.
  • 15mph MAX! for this turn.
  • Be alert for cars from your left.

Follow for about 200ft and then bear right onto North Street. 

  • Yes, you should signal…but don’t forget to cancel the signal after the turn.

STRAIGHT through the first stop sign. 

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there at the same time as the vehicle on the left, you have ROW.

Follow to the next stop sign. Turn RIGHT onto Copps Hill Road.

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there at the same time as the vehicle across from you, you have ROW.

Follow to the traffic light. Turn RIGHT onto Danbury Road.

  • Be careful of your speed when going down the hill.
  • I do NOT recommend a right-on-red.
  • When the light turns green, you have the ROW and should get the car moving immediately.
  • When you make the turn, there will be 2 available lanes. Choose the FAR lane (closer to the yellow line). The rightmost lane immediately becomes a turning lane back into Stop and Shop. I promise you will NOT get marked off for this on the test!

Follow STRAIGHT to the second traffic light (next to the Mobil gas station).

  • 28mph MAX!
  • Keep good following distances.

STRAIGHT through the traffic light. RIGHT back into RDS.

  • When turning right back into RDS, go slow and be accurate.
  • Reverse parking on right.

ROUTE #3

Exit RDS at the traffic light near the Mobil gas station. Turn LEFT onto Danbury Road.

  • Yield to oncoming traffic across from you.
  • Do NOT enter the intersection if you cannot clear.

Follow STRAIGHT until you reach the second traffic light.

Turn RIGHT onto Farmingville Road.

  • I do NOT recommend a right on red.

At the first stop sign, turn RIGHT onto Ligi’s Way.

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there as the same time as the vehicle on the left or across from you, you have ROW.
  • Be careful on Ligi’s Way, as there may be construction.

STRAIGHT at the first stop sign. 

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there as the same time as the vehicle on the right, THEY have ROW. If you get there at the same time as the person across from you or on your left, you have ROW.

Follow up and and around the sharp right-hand curve.

  • While you should slow for this curve, do not go ridiculously slow.

Just before the stop sign, turn right into the old Fit Club parking lot.

  • Reverse parking on the right.

Once you are done parking, turn RIGHT out of the parking lot and then RIGHT again at the stop sign (Grove St.).

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there as the same time as the vehicle on the left, you have ROW.

Follow to the traffic light. Turn LEFT onto Danbury Road and then a quick RIGHT back into RDS.

  • When turning left at the green light, yield to vehicles from the opposite direction who are going straight or turning right.
  • When turning right back into RDS, go slow and be accurate.

 

ROUTE #4

Exit RDS at the traffic light near the Mobil gas station. Go STRAIGHT across to Grove St.

  • YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY when the light turns green! Try to go. Make an attempt to go. BUT be ready to stop if a person across from you cuts you off.

Follow STAIGHT up the hill. Turn LEFT onto Old Quarry. 

  • You have the right of way to go! HOWEVER, be careful of people across from you who may cut you off while you turn left. Just like the previous intersection…Try to go. Make an attempt to go. BUT be ready to stop.

Make an immediate LEFT into the old Fit Club parking lot.

  • Reverse parking on the right.

Once you are done parking, turn RIGHT out of the parking lot and then LEFT at the stop sign onto Grove St.

  • First yield to people at the stop sign on the left if they got their first and are going straight in front of you. THEN yield to all people from the right coming up the hill.

Follow STRAIGHT through the first stop sign. 

  • Proceed in the order of arrival. If you get there at the same time as the vehicle on the left, you have ROW.

Turn RIGHT at the next stop sign onto Prospect St. 

  • After your stop, creep forward to see better to the left. Yield to anyone coming from the left crossing in front of you.

Follow to the traffic light, turn RIGHT. 

  • NO TURN ON RED. Watch for pedestrians.

STRAIGHT to the next stop sign then bear RIGHT. 

  • Yield to anyone across from you at the other stop sign if they got there first.

Turn LEFT back into the driving school.

  • Yield to oncoming traffic.
  • Make your turn accurate.

 

REVERSE PARKING

  • Signal right when you pull up to the space. Signal left when you pull away from the space.
  • Head checks before each move.
  • Go SLOW!
  • Look over both shoulders when reversing.
  • Remember! Parking does not need to be perfect. If you are in the space, you are good. If you are out of the space then make a correction.
